Legal aid services are not equivalent to pro bono services

BC lawyers will debate a resolution at the Law Society of BC’s annual general meeting on October 30, 2018, that calls on the Law Society to mandate that all lawyers represent legal aid clients for free. This resolution is proposed by two Victoria lawyers and not by the Law Society.

If passed, the resolution would create serious legal and administrative challenges for the Legal Services Society, the provider of legal aid in BC, and would undermine the work of the many lawyers who have dedicated their careers to helping legal aid clients.

The Legal Services Society’s CEO, Mark Benton, QC, has written the Law Society to outline his concerns. To read it, click the link below.
